Essential C++: the foundation

Good C++ knowledge is the cornerstone of developing current and future Windows applications and components. While other languages and development tools are also important, C++ remains the unquestioned choice for performance and flexibility. C++ is also mandatory for developing applications that take advantage of OLE and future versions of Windows. If you are not acclimated to standard C programming, the entire scope of C++ cannot be mastered in a single course. This course is designed to focus your initial exposure on the fundamental issues that originate in C and then transition you to C++ by introducing object-oriented techniques.

Essential C++ is designed to provide you with a usable set of skills for using Microsoft's Visual C++ environment, as well as a knowledge base for further study of the C++ language. Emphasis is placed on providing you with a working knowledge of C programming as it relates to C++ and on good programming techniques that result in readable and reusable code. The course is not designed to cover the syntax and semantics of as many C++ features as time allows, as such information is not sufficient for writing good applications. Discussions of programming paradigms, efficiency tradeoffs, and common traps and pitfalls are also explored.

PREREQUISITES

You should have programming experience in at least one other high-level language.

UPON COMPLETION

You will be familiar with the Visual C++ development environment and able to begin utilizing C++ in your software development. You will also understand the principles of object-oriented programming and prepared for an advanced study of C++.
