Essential MFC: mastering the framework

As Windows software becomes more complex, Microsoft is building more into MFC to make the development process more streamlined and efficient. Unfortunately, many MFC-based projects tend to ignore the importance of performance and reliability issues in favor of minimizing development time. Performance and reliability still demand well written C++ code. If you develop in C++ for Windows, MFC is likely to be your principle Windows development tool, however this is not a license to ignore important design and implementation issues. Understanding the tradeoffs that are inherent in an MFC-based project is vital to achieving tight, robust code.

If you have been using C or C++ and the SDK, this course will show you how to improve your quality of life by using the MFC application framework. The course covers the complete functionality of MFC as provided with the Visual C++ development environment. During the course, you will build many lab exercises that leverage off the framework classes provided with MFC. Emphasis is placed on extending your MFC-based projects beyond the basic functionality provided by the Visual C++ Wizards.

PREREQUISITES

You should have user-level skills for Windows, programming proficiency in C++, and an understanding of the Windows SDK.

UPON COMPLETION

You will have a solid working knowledge of the MFC development tools and be capable of rapidly creating full featured Windows applications in C++ through the use of Microsoft's Wizards and by building and maintaining their own class libraries. You will also be capable of making informed decisions about the tradeoffs between using MFC and the SDK as they relate to their own applications.
