Essential OLE: building OLE applications in MFC

You need to support OLE Documents, OLE Controls or OLE Automation in your MFC-based application, and you enjoy spending weekends sailing, surfing or wine-tasting, not pouring over thousands of pages of OLE and COM documentation. While MFC will help you achieve your goals, it should not be taken as a leap of faith. The goal of this course is to show you the many possibilities that exist beyond AppWizard by providing a deeper look into the interactions between MFC, OLE and COM.

In this course you will learn the techniques used to implement OLE functionality in MFC-based applications. The course covers all facets of OLE technology including compound documents, and Automation. We also devote an entire day to OLE Controls. The focus of the course is to introduce you to the technology behind OLE and show you how to integrate OLE functionality into your existing MFC applications. Through building lab exercises you will see how MFC implements each core OLE technology. Learning how MFC does this is extremely important to your OLE development, therefore, the Visual C++ Wizards are only used after the underlying concepts and code are examined in detail.

PREREQUISITES

You should be proficient with C++, and have working knowledge of basic MFC concepts (e.g., Document/View hierarchies, Message Maps, et cetera).

UPON COMPLETION

You will leave with a thorough understanding of how MFC implements OLE functionality and how they can introduce OLE features within their own MFC-based applications.
