Client/Server Visual Basic: creating database applications

The growth of client/server database management systems such as SQL Server, Sybase and ORACLE has generated a demand for Windows applications that maintain and analyze corporate data. Visual Basic 4.0 offers many strategies for accessing these databases, such as using the data control with bound controls, using Data Access Objects (DAO) with code, and directly calling the ODBC API all offer differing degrees of productivity, performance and flexibility. As a Visual Basic developer, you have many important decisions to make in order meet the requirements and constraints of your database applications. This course is designed to show developers who are already comfortable with Visual Basic fundamentals the entire spectrum of available database functionality. You will learn various approaches to database development with Visual Basic and test them through lab exercises that step you through essential techniques. There will be discussions on multi-user performance, capacity and scalability issues, such as when is it appropriate to upsize your Access database file to a client/server solution. The course also concentrates on using Visual Basic in a client-server environment with today's most common ODBC database servers. You will also create applications against a SQL Server database system to make you a comfortable working with server-side components such as stored procedures and triggers.

PREREQUISITES

You are expected to have between 6 months to 1 year of experience using Visual Basic or to have completed DevelopMentor's course, Essential Visual Basic: the foundation. You should be comfortable with topics such as declaring procedures, variables, constants and arrays, datatype conversion, writing decision structures and loops, error handling, control arrays, declaring and setting object variables, creating MDI applications with menus and toolbars, and declaring and calling routines from DLLs.

UPON COMPLETION

You will be able to create true client/server solutions utilizing today's most common Database Management Systems (DBMS). You will also be able to design and implement robust database applications that can access the data in many different ODBC database servers as well as a single Access MDB file. And you will gain an understanding of the importance of back end components such as table structures, indexes, stored procedures and triggers to the overall client/server picture.
